Would you have a minute to talk about god?
Here is a thing I would like to discuss.
Obviously everyone knows, that many religious people justify opressing homosexuals by saying that being gay is against Gods will, and they know this because the Bible says so. It has been counterargued a million times, by pointing out that the citations saying that homosexuality is wrong, are not actually about homosexuality at all, and the same moral instructions also prevent us from using clothes made out of mixed fibers and devorcing.

These are all valid points, yes but people seem to forget one important thing, and it really bothers me how it’s gone past people.
Since I started school 10 years ago, I have been taught, that in christianity the book isn’t written by god. In Islam, Allah himself dictated the text, so everything in Koran should be taken literally. Correct me if I’m wrong, my knowledge on Islam isn’t too big, but my knowledge in Christianity is, and I can tell you this much: The Bible is written by humans, not God, not Jesus, humans. Remember John and Matthew and Luke and friends? They wrote the Bible, and they’re definitely humans!
The Bible is a collection of smaller books and stories by like a million people gathered over a long time. I don’t remember the numbers, but they’re easily find on the wonderland we call internet. And it is ”official” in Christian beliefs that you are not supposed to take the Bible literally. Of course there are Fundamentalists, who are all about taking the Bible as literally as they can, but I highly doubt all of the people not tolerating homosexuality out there are Fundamentalists. Besides a Fundamentalist wouldn’t get a divorce or use cloth with mixed fibers, so atleast they practice what they preach, even if they are being unfair.
Also I don’t know wich part of the bible the citations are off, but I’d they’re in the Old Testament, because the New is all about Jesus and Jesus never said anything about homosexuality. Now this fact has atleast two meanings:
1. I assume the ”a man should not lie with a man the way he lies with a woman” stuff is from the part where people were given all kinds of moral instructions, like the mixed fibers stuff, and only eat certain kind of meat and so on. Now, the old Testament is actually originally a book for the Jewish people. (In case you didn’t know, Christianity was born from Judaism, and the main difference is, that Christians believe, that Jesus is the messiah, and the Jewish are still waiting for the messiah.) The Jewish were a small people, and the moral code was mostly to keep the Jews from dying out. For example the way the old Testament instructs you to eat is apparently rather healthy. So even if the citation was about homosexuality (which it is not), it would still be probably just so the Jews would have more children and not go extinct. And like you can see, nowadays we don’t have to worry about that,
yours truly, 8 billion people.
yours truly, 8 billion people.
2. Like I said, the old Testament is the Holy Book of Judaism, Tanakh. Only combined with the New Testament does it become the Bible. The actually important book for christians isn’t the old Testament, but the new one, because it has all the stuff about Jesus, who is what Christianity is all about, because without him we would be Jewish. The old Testament is included in the Bible basically as just stories and Christian history, and because it has predictions of the Messiah. Christians get their moral code from the New Testament and mostly from what Jesus said (=nothing about homosexuals). And what did Jesus say? Love your neighbour, love is the most important.
RECAP: So if someone pisses you off, because they are a christian and their Holy Bible says homosexuality is a sin, you should just tell them, that everything that they are saying is invalid, because A, the Holy Bible is written by men not god, so you shouldn’t take it literally and you aren’t even being an atheist rebel right now, but stating the official believes of Christianity, B, even if it was about homosexuality it would still probably be just to keep babies coming in a society that existed over 2000 years ago, and C, the Old Testament isn’t even that essential in Christianity, and Jesus wants you to love, not hate, so convert into Judaism and we’ll talk again.
Another thing that bothers me, is how sometimes people take part in conversations and are like: ”I’m christian, and I approve gay marriage/gayness in general”. The thing is, of course you do. You should! I don’t like it that Christianity and homosexuality are somehow opposites. There are plenty of gay people who are christians, and plenty of straight christians who support gay rights. Just because there are people who object, and jusify it with Christianity, doesn’t mean objecting homosexuality has anything to do with Christianity itself. The core of Christianity isn’t opressing gay people.
”And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”
And that is why I am a christian: Because I believe in the true christian values: love, acceptance and helping those in need, with all my heart.
